Bedding-In
disc pads is one of the most important procedures after
fitting a new set of disc pads to your vehicle. It is like
running in a new engine, it should be done gently and with
considerable care.
WHY?
Because
what you do in the first few kilometers of vehicle travel
and braking will determine the performance of the vehicle
braking operation later on..
What
should you be doing?
Firstly
check that the following is satisfactory :
a)
Rotors are running true and do not have any high spots on
rubbing surface.
b) Rotors are above minimum thickness and do or do not need
machining.
c) Wheel bearings are adjusted correctly.
d) Caliper head components move freely.
e) Rubber boots are not damaged.
f) Brake hoses are not perished or damaged.
g) Brake pistons are pushed back with open bleeder valve.
h) Clean up all brake assembly components.
i) Top up master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid.
Discs
need machining?
On
vehicle machining operation :
a)
Double check the bearings are correctly adjusted.
b) Take a trimming cut to remove disc lips.
c) Take a truing cut across rubbing surface.
d) Final cut to be as slow and fine as possible.
e) Polish rubbing surfaces with fine emery.
f) Wash down with Metho ( not petroleum based ).
g) Refit new disc pads to caliper assembly.
h) Reinstall caliper to stub brackets.
Off
car machining operation:
a)
Remove disc rotor and set up on machining mandrel.
b) Clock up with hub running true (not the rubbing surface)

With
the disc pads fitted, what next?
Bedding
in the new disc pad material :
a)
Pump brake pedal a few times before moving vehicle.
b) Check brake fluid level is correct.
c) Refit wheels and dress rims to correct specifications.
d) Test drive the vehicle and bed in the new material :
1) accelerate vehicle to 60 kph.
2) apply brakes with gently to moderate pressure.
3) slow vehicle to about 5-10 kph (do not stop).
4) repeat steps 1 to 3 for 10 to 20 times, allowing 200-500
meters between applications.
5) Remember to allow the cooling period between each application,
as repeated application too quickly will only burn out the
new material and give poor braking performance.
Is
there anything else?
When
handing back the vehicle to the owner :
a)
Tell them to run the vehicle gently for the next 300 km.
b) That a check of the brake fluid in a few days would be
a good idea.
